America loves disabled kids. Or, I should say, it loves to think it loves disabled kids.(Speaking from experience, the more complicated and “adult” my needs got, starting from age sixteen or so, I started to watch all the cultural affection dry up). Now, though, attacks on disabled youth go much deeper than my grunge-backed identity crisis. First, take Betsy DeVos(please!) and herrollbacks of guidelines for Special Education. Failure to get an adequate education can haunt someone long after Betsy is back protecting Michigan from bear attacks at grade schools.
If that is not visceral enough, consider the case of Rosamaria Hernandez, greeted not with flowers or candy when she had her gall bladder out, butICE agents, separated from her mother when she needs support most.She has been in the country since she was three months old, clearly presents no flight risk and has relatives who are citizens...why is our country that is “better than this,” going after her with both barrels?
